What Is Oud Perfume? A Complete Guide to Oud, Oud Oil & Arabian Fragrances
By Black Oud Factory

Oud is the scent most people associate with the Gulf, yet very few buyers can explain what it actually is. This guide covers oud perfume, oud oil, the main fragrance types, how oud perfume is manufactured, and how a brand can produce its own line in the UAE.
Walk into a majlis in Ajman, a mall in Dubai or a wedding in Riyadh and you will meet the same scent: deep, woody, slightly smoky, and impossible to mistake for anything European. That scent is oud. It is the backbone of Arabian perfumery and, commercially, one of the most durable categories in the Gulf fragrance market.
This guide explains what oud perfume is in plain language, what oud oil actually is, how oud fragrances are produced in a factory, and what is involved if you want to launch your own oud perfume brand from the UAE.
What Is Oud Perfume?
Oud perfume is a fragrance built around the scent of agarwood — the dark, resin-rich wood that forms inside Aquilaria trees when they respond to a particular mould infection. Not every Aquilaria tree produces it, which is why genuine agarwood has always been expensive and why the material carries so much prestige across the region.
In traditional Arabian perfumery, oud appears in three everyday forms: chips burned over charcoal as bakhoor, thick oil applied directly to the skin as attar, and alcohol-based sprays. Modern perfumery uses oud differently again, as a heavy base note under rose, saffron, amber, vanilla or citrus in an eau de parfum. A perfume described as an oud fragrance may therefore be anything from a pure oil to a light contemporary spray with a woody heart.
What Is Oud Oil?
Oud oil, also called agarwood oil or dehn al oud, is the oil distilled from infected agarwood. It is dense, long-lasting and varies enormously by origin, tree age and distillation method — two oils from the same region can smell noticeably different.
It helps to keep three different things apart when you read a product label or a supplier quotation:
- Natural oud oil — distilled from real agarwood. Limited in supply, high in cost, and normally used in small quantities or sold as a pure attar.
- Oud-inspired fragrance compositions — perfumer-built accords using aroma materials that recreate the woody, resinous character of oud. This is what most commercial oud perfumes on the market are based on.
- Blended formulas — a composition that combines a measured amount of natural oud oil with other fragrance materials to balance cost, consistency and performance.
None of these is dishonest in itself. What matters is that the brief, the quotation and the label agree with each other. If a supplier quotes a price that could not possibly cover natural agarwood oil while describing the product as pure oud, ask for the breakdown.
How Is Oud Perfume Made?
Production follows the same sequence whether the run is a few hundred bottles or a full container.
1. Fragrance formulation
A perfumer works from a brief: the character you want, the market, the price per unit and the concentration. Trials are prepared, reviewed and adjusted until a direction is approved.
2. Ingredient selection
Oud oil and the supporting materials are selected against that brief and its budget. This is the stage where the decision between natural oud oil, an oud accord or a blend is taken — and it should be written into the specification sheet, not left verbal.
3. Compounding and maturation
The concentrate is weighed and compounded, then combined with the carrier. Alcohol-based formulas are usually left to macerate so the materials settle together, and are chilled and filtered before filling. Oil-based attars follow a different, simpler route.
4. Testing and quality checks
Each batch is checked against the approved reference for scent, colour and clarity, with records kept so a repeat order can be matched later.
5. Filling
Bottles are filled to the agreed volume, fitted with pumps or applicators and crimped or capped.
6. Packaging and labelling
Decoration, labelling, boxing, cellophane and shipper cartons complete the unit. For export orders, the documentation set is prepared alongside the goods.
Different Types of Oud Perfume
- Oud eau de parfum — an alcohol-based spray, the most common retail format and the easiest to wear in daily use.
- Oud oil and attar — concentrated, alcohol-free, applied in small amounts to pulse points or clothing.
- Oud muattar — wood chips soaked in a perfume blend and burned as incense, traditional in Gulf homes.
- Arabian oud fragrances — oud paired with rose, saffron, musk or amber in the classic regional style.
- Oud perfume oils — roll-on formats that sit between an attar and a spray, popular for travel and gifting.
- Oud-based blends — contemporary compositions that use oud as a base under fruit, citrus or gourmand notes for younger buyers.
What Does Oud Perfume Smell Like?
Most people describe oud as woody, warm and slightly smoky, with a resinous depth underneath. Depending on the formula you will also find earthy, leathery, sweet, balsamic or spicy facets, and a sharper animalic edge in some natural oils.
There is no single oud smell. The origin of the material, the concentration and everything blended around it change the result completely — a rose-oud reads soft and floral, while a saffron-and-leather oud reads dark and traditional. This is why trying a fragrance matters far more than reading a note list.
How to Choose an Oud Perfume
- Start with the style you actually like. Traditional heavy oud and modern light oud are very different experiences.
- Check the concentration. Eau de toilette is lighter, eau de parfum richer, and pure oils the most concentrated of all.
- Match it to the occasion. Heavier ouds suit evenings and cooler months; lighter blends work better for daytime and Gulf summer heat.
- Test on skin, not on paper, and give it a few hours. Oud develops slowly and the first ten minutes are not the fragrance.
- Judge longevity yourself over a full day rather than relying on a claim, since skin type and climate both affect it.
Oud Perfume in the UAE and GCC
Fragrance in the Gulf is not a seasonal purchase. Perfume is part of hospitality, worn daily, given at weddings and Eid, and layered in the home with bakhoor. That habit supports year-round demand for oud perfume in the UAE, attar, incense and luxury gift sets across the GCC.
The manufacturing side of this market is concentrated in the northern emirates. Arabian perfume brands across the UAE source compounding, filling and packaging from factories in Ajman and Sharjah while selling through retail in Dubai, so oud fragrance developed in Ajman commonly reaches shelves in Dubai, Sharjah and the wider Gulf within the same season.

Private label means the factory produces the perfume and you own the brand. It is how most new fragrance labels in the UAE start, because it removes the need for your own lab, filling line and packaging supply chain.
- Fragrance selection — choose from existing oud compositions or brief a custom one.
- Bottle selection — shape, glass weight, volume, pump or applicator type.
- Custom packaging — rigid boxes, inserts, finishes and gift sets.
- Branding — your logo applied by printing, foiling or labelling.
- Production quantity — our minimum is 100 units per product, so a scent can be tested in market before scaling.
- Wholesale and bulk orders — repeat runs matched to the approved batch reference.
- Business requirements — a trade licence and your own brand artwork are normally needed to sell in the UAE and GCC; product registration requirements vary by market and by emirate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is oud perfume?
A fragrance built around the scent of agarwood, sold as a spray, an oil, an attar or incense. It is the signature style of Arabian perfumery.
What is oud oil made from?
Natural oud oil is distilled from the resin-rich wood that forms inside Aquilaria trees after a specific mould infection.
Is oud perfume made from natural oud?
Not always. Many commercial oud perfumes use perfumer-built oud accords or a blend of natural oud oil with other materials. Ask your supplier to state which approach a given formula uses.
How long does oud perfume last?
Concentrated oils and eau de parfum generally last longer than lighter concentrations, but wear time depends on the formula, your skin and the climate, so it is best judged by testing rather than by a stated figure.
What is the difference between oud perfume and attar?
Attar is an alcohol-free concentrated oil applied in small amounts. Oud perfume usually refers to an alcohol-based spray. Both can be built around oud.
How is oud perfume manufactured?
Formulation, ingredient selection, compounding and maturation, batch testing, filling, then packaging and labelling — with a specification sheet approved before the production run begins.
Can I manufacture my own oud perfume brand in the UAE?
Yes. Brands commonly work with a UAE factory on a private-label basis, supplying their brand artwork and approving a sample before production. A trade licence is normally required to sell locally.
Does Black Oud Factory offer private-label perfume manufacturing?
Yes. Private-label production, custom fragrance development, filling, decoration and packaging are all handled at our Ajman plant, with a minimum of 100 units per product.
