Oud Perfume Manufacturing in the UAE: Sourcing, Grades and Cost

Oud is the most misunderstood line item on a fragrance quote. Understanding grade, origin and blend ratio is what keeps an oud brief from doubling in cost.
Oud — agarwood resin — is the anchor of Gulf perfumery and the single most variable cost in any Arabian fragrance brief. Two quotes for an oud eau de parfum can differ by a factor of five and both be honest, because the word oud covers a range from pure distilled oil to synthetic reconstructions.
What you are actually specifying
- Pure oud oil (dehn al oud) — distilled agarwood, sold by the tola, priced by origin and distillation
- Oud accord — a perfumer's blend that reads as oud while using a fraction of the natural material
- Bakhoor — wood chips or compressed blends soaked in fragrance oils and burned, not sprayed
- Oud-forward EDP — an alcohol-based perfume where oud is the dominant note but not the whole formula
Deciding which of the four you want before you request pricing saves a round of quoting. A retail line at an accessible price point almost always uses an oud accord; a limited collector's release uses distilled oil.
Origin and grade
Cambodian, Indian, Malaysian and Indonesian agarwood each carry distinct profiles — from sweet and resinous to sharp, barnyard and animalic. Grade within an origin depends on resin content, tree age and distillation method. Ask your manufacturer to run you through the actual oils they hold rather than choosing from a price list, because the vocabulary is not standardised across suppliers.
Where the cost sits
In a mass-market oud perfume, the bottle and packaging often cost more than the juice. In an oil-based dehn al oud, the juice is almost the entire cost and the packaging is a rounding error. This flips the whole negotiation: for the first, push on glass and box sourcing; for the second, push on grade and fill volume.
Sustainability and documentation
Wild agarwood is a CITES-listed material and cultivated plantation agarwood is now the commercial norm. If you export to the EU, the UK or North America, confirm what documentation your target market requires for your specific formulation before production, not after your first shipment is booked.
